INSIDE GREENBURGH TRAFFIC COURT
Greenburgh Traffic Court maintains one of the heaviest
traffic calendars in the State.
This is due in large part to I-287 and I-87 passing through their
jurisdiction. Furthermore, the
various villages and hamlets comprising Greenburgh also contribute to the high
volume of traffic tickets. These
hamlets and villages include but are not limited to Tarrytown, Elmsford, and
Adrsley.
Once a driver is issued a speeding ticket, they technically
have 48 hours to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. This can be done either in person or by
mail. If a driver enters a plea of
guilty, they will be mailed a fine notice. Their failure to pay the fine will result in their license
being suspended. On the other
hand, a driver that enters a plea of not guilty, be mailed a letter advising
them to appear in court.
IN COURT
Appearing in Greenburg Traffic Court can be an intimidating
process. It is a very busy court
and it can take a few hours before your case is called. In general, ticketed drivers will line up
outside the courthouse and wait for the court security to open the doors to the
public. Upon entering the
building, the court security will require drivers to pass through a metal
detector. After passing security, the driver will be advised to have a seat and wait to see a prosecutor. After meeting with the prosecutor, they will be advised to wait again in order to see a judge. The judge will have the ultimate
discretion on the final adjudication of the case.
AFTER COURT
If your case is resolved and a fine is issued, the court’s
preference is that fines be paid on the same day that the case is
resolved. With good cause, the
court may allow a driver to pay within a few days of their court appearance.
