About Southampton

Officially known as Town of Southampton, it is located in Suffolk County (East End Long Island) and has a population of almost 58,000 people according to the 2010 census. The history of the town can be traced back to 1640 when the first settlers (one boy, one woman and eight men) arrived there. The population rapidly increased to 43 families after the town’s boundaries were established by the first settlers. The town of Southampton was named after Hampshire’s Port of Southampton (England).

The first meeting house in Southampton was located at the site of the modern day Southampton Hospital. Halsey House located at 249 Main Street and constructed by one of the first settlers is the oldest building in Southampton that’s still intact today.

The town of Southampton has 48 public and private cemeteries including Shinnenock Hills Club, an acclaimed Indian burial ground which is no longer in use. It also has more than a hundred points of interest including historic districts and historic markers, all of which are talked about on the town’s historic website.

The Town of Southampton is divided into 7 incorporated villages and 16 hamlets. A hamlet is a term used in the state of New York to refer to unincorporated areas. The incorporated villages of Southampton include West Hampton Dunes, West Hampton Beach, Southampton, Sagaponack, Sag Harbor, Quogue and North Haven. A town supervisor is usually in charge of Southampton.

The village of Southampton is perhaps the oldest incorporated region of the Town of Southampton. It was named after the Earl of Southampton and arguably serves as the commercial center for the southern part of Long Island. In addition, the village is where Southampton’s only hospital is located. It forms part of The Hamptons, a prestigious community where the wealthy come to spend their summers. This forms the base for Southampton’s reputation for exclusivity and affluence.

For such a small town as this one, the transport network is quite established. It has a ferry that takes 114 drivers across Shelter Island Sound between Shelter Island and North Haven. It also has three airports including Southampton Heliport on the east of Shinnenock Inlet, East Hampton Airport located along Southampton-East Hampton Town Line and Francis S. Gabreski Airport located north of West Hampton. The town has an established road network and is primarily served by Suffolk County Bus Transit bus routes. Hampton Jitnet buses are however available for day trips to New York City.

About Beacon

Located in Dutchess County, New York, Beacon is a city whose population was placed at a little over 15,500 during the 2010 US census. The city was so named as a way to commemorate the beacon fires that were lit on summit of Fishkill Mountains to alert the Continental Army about the movements of the British troops. Originally, the city of beacon consisted of the villages of Fishkill Landing and Matteawan in 1709. These were also the first settlements in Dutchess County.

While the history of Beacon can be traced to 1683, it was only elevated to city status in 1913, amalgamating Fishkill Landing, Matteawan and a portion of the hamlet of Glenham. Urban renewal in the 1960’s led to destruction of several buildings of historic significance while in the 1970’s, a decline in economy led to collapse of many factories and business in the city. Beacon started it’s ascend to economic glory in the 1990’s, a growth which was sparked by construction of one of the world’s largest museum, Dae. Other factors that contribute to the growth of Beacon’s economic growth include Beacon Sloop Club which was established in 1978 with an aim of promoting environmental awareness of Hudson River, sound ecological practices and recreation; various parks like Bannerman Caste Trust, Hudson Highlands Park, Mt. Beacon Park and more as well as Beacon Theatre, which is a community theater that is produced by 4th Wall Productions.

The transportation network of Beacon is quite established and includes the county’s Loop transportation system, the city’s shuttle service that runs on Sundays, commuter service to New York City and Interstate 84 which also connects the city to New York State Thruway, Taconic State Parkway and Stewart International Airport.

The city of Beacon is a historical center and this is evidenced by buildings which as almost as old as the two villages. Some of the oldest buildings in Beacon include Madam Brett Homestead (also the oldest in Dutchess County), Borgadus-De-Windt House (built between 1750 and 1830), Reformed Church of Beacon (originally known as Reformed Dutch Church of Fishkill Landing and the oldest church in the city of Beacon), Eustatia (a brick cottage built in 1867 in Victorian Gothic Style) and the Howland Cultural Center which is also known as Howland Library, designed in 1872 by Richard Morris Hunt.

The city of Beacon is governed via a mayor-council system. The council is made of six members, four of which are elected from one of four wards while the other two are elected at-large. The mayor of the city is voted for by the residents of Beacon.
