Cortlandville town is located in Cortland County, New York. The town surrounds the city of Cortland and is the on the Western border of the county. Back in the 2010 census, the town had a population of 8,509 making it the county's second largest political subdivision of the Cortland city. History.  Historically, Cortlandville is located in the former Central New York Military Tract founded at the end of the Revolutionary war. The area was first inhabited in 1792 by John Miller and his family. It was then formed from the southern part of the Homer town in 1829. Later on, the town was reincorporated in 1864. What is now the State University of New York was erected in the town's region in 1866.
