Court Tip – where
to go: Stony Point Justice Court is located at 6 Patriot Hills Driving
in Stony Point New York. Upon
entering the courthouse, you will be asked to walk through a metal
detector. It is important to leave
inappropriate metal objects at home.
After you are granted entry into the building, you will walk down a
small hallway and enter the courtroom to your right. For the most part, you will be instructed to be seated and
wait for a pre-trial conference.
If you see the officer that issued the ticket, you will have the
opportunity to meet and discuss your matter with the officer. If your ticket was issued by the State
Police, you will have an opportunity to meet with the prosecutor who is usually
positioned on the left hand side of the courtroom next to the podium.
Things to bring:
you should bring your court notice advising you to appear in court. If you are displaced, showing the court
personnel your letter may help in directing you where to go and what to do.
If your case is resolved at the pre-trial conference, the
court will ask that you pay any fines with the Court Clerk. It is important that you bring enough
money to cover any court fees or fines.
Dress Code:
while there is no official dress code, it is important that you dress neatly
and always conduct yourself in a respectful manner with the court. Many judges frown upon litigants
wearing shorts, open toe sandals, and other similar items.
Sign-in:
even though you may have met with the officer in court and discussed your
matter, it is important to check-in with the court clerk in the front of the
courtroom. Failure to advise the
clerk that you are in court may result in your case not being called.
About the Court: Stony Point Justice Court is a local
court with limited jurisdiction. It has the power to adjudicate misdemeanor
crimes, landlord tenant cases, and matters otherwise considered to be small
claims cases.
Stony Point has retained an attorney to prosecute traffic
matters issued by the State Police.
Tickets issued by the Stony Point Police Department are prosecuted by
the officers that issued the summons.
Tickets issued by the Park Police are prosecuted by the New York State
Park Police Officer that issued the summons.
A large number of park summons are issued along Lake Welch
Drive. These summons include but
are not limited to the failure to properly secure a child a seatbelt under VTL
1229(c), disorderly conduct, and unlawful possession of marijuana.
