Taghkanic Town Court is a court of limited jurisdiction. It presides over a large number oftraffic tickets. A majority of the tickets are issued for speeding under VTL § 1180 (b) and VTL 1180(d). This is do in part because the a portion of the Taconic State Parkway passes through the Town. Many drivers unknowingly passing through the town on their way to Albany or to Massachusetts and find themselves having to fight a hefty speeding ticket. Taghkanic Court is located at 909 Route 82, Ancram, NY 12502 in Columbia County. It is conveniently located a short distance from the Taconic and only a few miles south of Albany.

This court has the power to adjudicate both civil and criminal matters. However, its power is limited in scope. It cannot try felony matters or significant civil matters. Many of the civil matters heard in this court are often referred to as small claims cases.
The primary prosecutor for Taghkanic is the Columbia County District Attorneys Office. The Court is also used for Town business. Town board meetings and other hearings may share the same space as the court.
