ABOUT THE COURT
Beacon City Court is local
court of jurisdiction. It has the
power to adjudicate criminal, small claims, and traffic cases. It is part of the 9th Judicial District
of NY’s Unified Court System. The
9th JD is comprised of Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Dutchess
Counties.
Its powers are limited in scope. For example, the majority of civil cases heard in this court are well under $5,000.00 in controversy. The majority of criminal cases start off as misdemeanors. Cases involving a higher sum of money in dispute and more serious in criminal nature are designated for higher courts such as the Supreme Court or the County Court.
