Speed Cameras To Come to New York

NYC may be the next major municipality to add cameras to catch speeding motorists.  The pilot program has been pasted by the New York State Legislature under the leadership of Senator Jeff Klein of the Bronx.  The cameras are to start in school zones and may expand to other areas.

This is a major victory for Mayor Michael Bloomberg who made these cameras a top priority of his administration.  He has cited the urgency behind the endact of this measure to safety.  He believes these cameras will make motorist drive more safely and decrease injuries to both drivers and pedestrians.

Under the law, these tickets will carry a $50.00 fine.

New York City already has red light cameras in place.  Meanwhile the speed cameras are in place in more than a dozen other municipalities.

This legislation is not without its fair share of opponents.  The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association has opposed the legislation and stressed the importance of hiring more police officers instead of automating the issuance of traffic tickets.

The bill is expected to be signed into law in a few days when the Governor signs it.
